Common Misconceptions about Women in Business

There is no doubt that women have a harder time in the workplace than men do and a big part of the reason is that there are a lot of misconceptions about women when it comes to business. In large part these misconceptions are based on the fact that women do things differently than men. However as more women move into senior positions in the business world it is becoming less of an issue.

The biggest misconception about women in business is that they are less serious about achieving success than men are. This is largely down to the way that women behave when they quit a job. Most women prefer to leave their job on good terms so they have a tendency to tell their employer that they are leaving for personal reasons. In many case this is not really true and there is a good reason that they are leaving, they got a better job, they hate their boss, whatever. Regardless by not giving the real reason and claiming that it is for personal reasons it creates that the belief that women are not as serious about their careers.

Another common misconception that is related to the first is that women have a lot more going on in their lives than men do. This is especially true if they have children. This leads to the belief that they will not be as dedicated to their jobs as men because of their other responsibilities. In reality these days men and women both have about the same level of responsibility outside of work when it comes to things like looking after children.

One of the stranger misconceptions is the one that women can't handle top level jobs because there are few women doing them. This is one of those chicken and egg things, because of the belief that women can't handle jobs in senior management few of them get promoted to those jobs. However the belief that they can't handle them is largely based on the fact that there are not a lot of women holding these jobs. The only way that this one is going to change is if enough women are able to move into top management jobs.

Another common belief that is not true at all is the one that women have different skills than men. There is a belief for example that women are better at multitasking and that they are better at dealing with people. In fact this may or may not be the case, the skills that you have in these fields is not really gender specific. There are things that some women do very well and other women do not do well at all. The same is true for men. The reality is that you can't draw any conclusions about what kind of skills somebody has based on their gender.
